As part of my local AUXCOMM group, I find myself helping out with public service events pretty often. As a mater of fact, April is our busiest month and we support between 8 and 10 events a year. For the last several years, one of those events has been the Appalachian Journey Bike Ride in Floyd County.
This annual bike ride covers 100 miles across various types of terrain and road conditions and attracts participants from all over the country.
This year I was positioned at aid station 2/4, which meant that we would see most riders on their way out and back from the course. I setup next the hospitality/aid station to report the number of cyclist through our location.I setup my normal kit for events like this. I put up my Harbor Freight canopy, folding chairs, and operated from the back of my truck. I brought my large 50ah LFP batter box with the 50 watt solar panel. It was way more power than necessary, but I had my kids along with their battery operated entertainment devices and the Starlink Mini was operational since cellphone signal was sparse.
It was a long day, we were setup by 8:30AM and since we were one of the last stations riders would pass through, we were on site until late in the afternoon.
Weather was warm and sunny and the event went well. I think only a couple of injuries were reported.
As always, I was glad to help out and look forward to assisting again in the future.
